THE MINNESOTA POLLUTION CONTROL AGENCY HAS MOST OF NORTHWESTERN MINNESOTA ON AN AIR QUALITY ALERT THROUGH THIS MORNING, DUE TO A SMOKE PLUME COMING OUT OF WESTERN CANADA. JIM KAISER IS AT THE GRAND FORKS NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE. MEANWHILE, IT’LL BE HOT THROUGH THE WEEKEND, WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES EXPECTED IN THE LOW TO MID NINETIES TOMORROW AND SUNDAY.

GRETCHEN MEHMEL, AT THE RED LAKE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, SAID YESTERDAY THAT DICK’S PARKWAY GOING INTO THE RED LAKE W.M.A. AND BELTRAMI ISLAND STATE FOREST IS OPEN AGAIN. THE D.N.R. HAD BEEN DOING ROAD WORK ON DICK’S PARKWAY THIS SUMMER. THE PARKWAY, FROM WARROAD TO FOURTOWN, OPENED LATE LAST WEEK.

THE PREMIERE OF A DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM CALLED “SMALL TOWN ROBOT” IS WEDNESDAY AT THE ROSO THEATRE. THE MOVIE IS ABOUT GREENBUSH, AND THE GREENBUSH-MIDDLE RIVER FIRST ROBOTICS TEAM, WHICH HAS BEEN A STATE CHAMPION TWO OF THE PAST THREE YEARS. JOE BRANDMEIER, FROM EDINA, IS THE PRODUCER AND DIRECTOR OF THE FILM; WHICH IS ALSO ENTERED IN THE TWIN CITIES FILM FESTIVAL.

AUDITIONS FOR PRAIRIE FIRE CHILDREN’S THEATRE PRODUCTION OF “CINDERELLA” ARE MONDAY AFTERNOON (1 PM) AT THE ROSEAU SCHOOL THEATRE. AS MANY AS 76 CHILDREN ARE NEEDED FOR PARTS IN THE MUSICAL. THE COST FOR THE WEEKLONG WORKSHOP IS TWENTY DOLLARS.

D.N.R. FISHERIES IN BAUDETTE HELD AN OPEN HOUSE IN LATE JULY ON A DRAFT FIVE YEAR FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PLAN. A FOURTEEN MEMBER FISHERIES INPUT GROUP HELPED DEVELOP THE PLAN, WHICH INCLUDES A CATCH AND RELEASE SPRING SEASON ON THE RAINY RIVER FOR WALLEYES; AND A REDUCED SAUGER HARVEST DURING WINTER FISHING. PHIL TALMAGE IS THE BAUDETTE AREA FISHERIES SUPERVISOR. COMMENTS ON THE PLAN ARE BEING ACCEPTED THROUGH NEXT WEDNESDAY, WITH AN UPDATE LAKE OF THE WOODS MANAGEMENT PLAN EXPECTED EARLY THIS FALL.

THE ROSEAU SCHOOL BOARD, AT THEIR AUGUST REGULAR MEETING, HEARD ABOUT MINNESOTA TAX CREDITS FOR EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES. SUPERINTENDENT LARRY GUGGISBERG SAYS PARENTS SHOULD KEEP RECEIPTS FOR THINGS LIKE PAPER, PENS, NOTEBOOKS, MUSICAL INSTRUMENT RENTALS AND AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING AND THAT MOST FAMILIES QUALIFY FOR THE CREDIT.

AN A.A.R.P. SMART DRIVER FOUR HOUR REFRESHER COURSE IS MONDAY (Eight to Noon) AT ROSEAU’S FOUR SEASONS SENIOR CENTER. THE INSTRUCTOR IS MICKY HULST.

A UNIVERSITY of MINNESOTA TEAM, LED BY VIRAJITA SINGH, WILL FINISH A DESIGN DOCUMENT FOR THE PROPOSED ROSEAU RIVER WATER TRAIL BY THE END OF THE MONTH. SHE SAYS THE UNIVERSITY HAS WORKED ON OTHER TRAIL PROJECTS, BUT THAT THIS ONE IS UNIQUE. THE PROPOSED ROSEAU RIVER TRAIL COULD EVENTUALLY EXTEND FROM HAYES LAKE STATE PARK TO THE ROSEAU RIVER WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, WITH STOPPING POINTS ALONG THE WAY.
